My Future In Games Development

Once I finish my university studies, I would like to look into making some of my game ideas come true. One of these ideas is to replicate an experience like Titanfall 2's titan combat, as this kind of gameplay is a niche within the shooter game genre. Expanding upon it with new and innovative designs such as an incredibly deep mech customisation system, with a wide range of tools at the players' disposal is one of the ideas I would like to incorprate into a setting similar to Titanfall 1's gritty futuristic setting and aesthetic.

Another idea I have is for a singleplayer, story driven real-time strategy game that borrows elements from a wide variety of different games. The setting would be a fantasy post-modern era that portrays the player as a commander of an army of soldiers, where they have the ability to possess their chosen lieutenants and grant them special powers. A mechanic which allows the player to seamlessly swap between a 3rd person perspective of their characters and a top down, map-like perspective to let the player jump around the map swapping between the different characters at their disposal is one feature of this game. The idea is that the player seamlessly controls large groups of soldiers from the map perspective, while transitioning into the 3rd person possession perspective of their lieutenants and partake in the combat themselves (this is very similar to valkyria chronicles' system). The combat while possessing a character would be similar to Dark Souls, where you have weapons and abilities you can employ to fight enemies, but you aren't very strong so any harm that comes your way may end up punishing you quite severely. I feel that this game idea is the one I have the deepest grasp on, however I would still like to flesh it out in future.

After university, there are a couple paths I believe will help me achieve my goals. One of them is to become an indie developer or start up an indie studio, where there is a lot more creative freedom in deciding what games will be made. Of course this also means I will either have to develop my skillset so that these goals are achieveable alone or I'll have to find people who would want to partake in making these ideas come true. The other path to these goals is to join an existing studio to develop my skillset and establish connections with the industry, making the transition into indie a lot smoother. Another path I could take is to use skills gained on the game development course to involve myself in a different industry while I build my skillset, but this means there will be a less smoother transition into the game industry.

Within the games industry, there are studios and developers who've been able to make their goals a reality, and one such developer is Eric Barone, or 'Concerned Ape' the man behind the game Stardew Valley. He crafted the game over a number of years by himself as a passion project alongside his regular job, but was eventually able to create a fleshed out game that went on to blow up within the games community. Since the initial release, Stardew Valley has recieved a large number of updates and was ported to Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. To say a dream made into reality would be an understatement, and the philosophies behind Stardew's creation are, in my eyes, very admirable in today's games industry. I look to Stardew as my ideal in games development, and what I want to be able to achieve.
